The Toplou monastery (Greek: Μονή Τοπλού) is one of the oldest and most important monasteries in the island of Crete. It was founded in the 15th century and is heavily fortified. The monastery is surrounded by 10 meters high walls and features some exceptional fresco paintings, a collection of Byzantine icons, books and documents, a museum of copperplate engravings and a 33 meters high bell tower.
